Helpful Advice: Common Ceiling Fan Questions

What fan size is right for my room?

Size does matter when it comes to ceiling fans, but the key is making sure that the blade span is correct. Take shoes for example, if you wear shoes that are too small you will rub a blister; too big and you will fall all over the place. It’s the same with ceiling fans. A fan that is too small is likely not to produce enough airflow for the room’s occupants; whereas, a ceiling fan that is too big might overpower the room and make the guests feel like they are in a wind tunnel. Cravens Electric recommends the following:

  • Large Rooms – For rooms up to 250 square feet (15′ x 15′) and larger, use a fan with a blade span of 50″, 52″, 54″, or 56″.
  • Medium Rooms – For rooms up to 144 square feet (12′ x 12′) we recommend fans with blade spans of 42″ or 44″.
  • Small Rooms – For rooms up to 64 square feet (8′ x 8′) should use a fan with a 32″ blade span.

How do ceiling fans cool a room?

Fans do not lower the temperature. Fans merely circulate air. This flow of air, however, makes you feel cooler by accelerating the rate of evaporation of perspiration on your skin. The human body is amazing in that it is constantly perspiring. If you have a ceiling fan in a room that is 85 degrees, running the fan can create a “wind chill factor” of roughly 75 degrees.

Using a ceiling fan in conjunction with an air conditioner results in lower energy costs, as it circulates the cooler air throughout the room more effectively and efficiently. You can lower the thermostat five degrees in a room with a ceiling fan and not notice any difference in temperature.

How do ceiling fans warm a room?

A ceiling fan can help lower average energy consumption costs in the winter by upwards of 15%. Since warm air rises, the air nearest to the ceiling is always going to be warmer. When the direction of the blades is reversed, a ceiling fan circulates the warmer air near the ceiling and distributes it throughout the room. This gives your thermostat a more realistic indication of the actual temperature of the room.

It’s important to know which ceiling fan directional setting to use during the appropriate season. For example, if you run your ceiling fan in a clockwise direction for cooler months in tandem with your heating unit, you can force the air in the room to circulate against the ceiling and walls, effectively distributing the warmer air throughout your living space.

What is the correct direction for my ceiling fan when it is hot and cold?

Most people wonder which direction fans should run during the various seasons. If it is hot, set your fan to run counter clockwise. If it is cold, set it run clockwise.

Summer: Counter Clockwise
Winter: Clockwise

How much can I expect to save in heating/cooling costs using ceiling fans?

Properly installed ceiling fans can provide year-round energy efficiency and cost savings. A ceiling fan can save up to 45% on summer cooling costs, and up to 15% on winter heating costs. Many energy companies offer free services that help you to evaluate the efficiency of your heating and cooling.

My ceiling fan does not have a light. Can you add one?

Yes. Most of today’s modern fans can be modified with a light kit. Generally, the light kit attaches to the bottom of the fan’s switch housing and requires a minor connection that a professional electrician like those at Cravens Electric can make. The thing to consider is that ceiling fans are not “one-size-fits-all.” The adaptability of ceiling fan light kits will vary by manufacturer and model, and not all light kits are interchangeable with particular models.

What length down rod should I use with my ceiling fan?

A general formula for calculating down rod length is the following:
Ceiling height in feet minus 10′ = downrod length.

This formula is based on the fan-to-floor distance of 8 feet plus 1 foot for the dimension of the
fan. So if your ceiling height is 10 feet, you need a 2 foot downrod in order to properly position the fan eight feet from the floor. The key is to make sure that your fan is roughly 8 feet from the floor in most cases. There are some variations to this formula and other things such as the size of the ceiling fan and the size of the room can impact your decisions, but Cravens Electric can help you determine which fan and configuration is most suitable for your living space.

What is ceiling fan blade pitch?

Blade pitch is the angle of inclination by the blades from horizontal. Quality fans generally have a blade pitch of 12-14 degrees in angle. Smaller ceiling fans can have a blade pitch as low as 8 or 10 degrees.

From a purely physics-based standpoint, the higher the pitch, the more pressure the fan blade applies to the air in front of it as it turns and the more air is forced downward or upward depending on the direction your ceiling fan is spinning. This is why some of your smaller ceiling fans look like they are over-working but not producing a whole lot of thrust.

You should test a fan before you buy it or make sure that there is a solid return policy in place if the ceiling fan does not meet your specifications for the room it is installed in.

My ceiling is sloped (not flat). Can I still install a ceiling fan?

Yes, there are aftermarket options you can use and even some manufacturer supplied assembly kits that you can retrofit to your ceiling fan that will accomplish this task.

Can I use a ceiling fan outside?

Ceiling fans can be installed anywhere there is a ceiling; however, in the Houston area we often see fan blades that begin to droop as the air saturates them with water. This will have an impact on the effectiveness of your fan. When shopping for an outdoor ceiling fan tell your sales representative the purpose for your selection. Generally, they will direct you to the appropriate line of outdoor rated ceiling fans.

Cravens Electric can install your ceiling fan quickly, and get your room or living space feeling cool and refreshing in no time.
